EVENTS IN VENICE:
CARNIVAL
Venice Carnival began to spread out in the XI century and reached
its maximum popularity and excesses in the XVIII century, declined
during the industrial development, but since 1979 recovered its
original strenght. Venice shows all its love for mystery during
this exciting and happy celebration in which masks and costumes
play a basic role thanks to anonymity they give.
Carnival of Venice 2004 is dedicated to the Orient, with particularry
attention to four places: Japan, Cina, Thailandia and Italy. The
dates are: from 7th February 2004 to 24th February 2004.Numerous
musical, theatre, dance, acrobatic performances original from the
Orient will animate for 17 days the San Marco Square, the theatres,
as well as the Venetian "campi", Lido, Mestre, Marghera
and Riviera del Brenta. Shows, parades and historical processions
in the ancient Venetian tradition of the famous Carnival will recall
hundreds of thousands of participants from all over the world.
GRAN TEATRO LA FENICE
In 1774, the San Benedetto Theatre, which had been Venice's leading
opera house for more than forty years, was burned to the ground.
The Venier family, owners of the theatre, decided to build a new
opera house on the Campo San Fantin. La Fenice was inaugurated on
May 16, 1792: it was named " La Fenice" (The Phoenix),
in an allusion to the company's survival, first of the fire, then
of expulsion from its former base..
Teatro La Fenice is one of Italy's oldest opera houses, a pilgrimage
shrine for opera lovers everywhere and the scene of many memorable
operatic premieres, including, in 1853, the dismal first-night flop
of Verdi's La Traviata. The great opera house was badly damaged
by fire in January 1996, and the meticulous restoration work --
helped in large part by donations from opera lovers around the world
– ended this 2003.
The Venetians got their Grand Theatre, La Fenice, back again with
the ouverture concert directed by Riccardo Muti on the 14 December
in President Ciampi's presence.
