The small Island of Sant’Elena stands on
a strip of land reclaimed from the Venetian lagoon and subsequently
developed, during the second decade of the last century, into one
the most distinctive areas of Venice, which is nowadays.
Sant’Elena was in origin the ancient site of the homonymous
church and monastery built in 1175, initially home to Augustinian
Clergy and later to Olivetan Monks. A canal separates the island
of from the land, to which it is well connected by a little bridge.
Sant’Elena is today a well-established residential area boasting
the most extensive display of greenery in the entire

city. It consists of avanues lined with trees, pleasently intersected
by broad and neat streets called “calli”. The large
Parco delle Rimembranze homes the city's Football (soccer)
Stadium of Venice.
On one side, the Sant’Elena district borders with the beautiful
Public Gardens and the Biennale Pavillons,
where, on occasion of the Biennale “International
Art Exhibition”, which takes place each two years,
from June to November, almost 40 Nations exhibit many examples of
Contemporary Art and Architecture. Close to Sant’Elena there
is the little island of S. Pietro, where you will
find the old Church of San Pietro, once occupied by a fortress (castello).
